In his NYT article, Alex Williams laments the loss of ease with which close friends were made and kept during previous decades. While it does seem to be a somewhat ubiquitous phenomenon, it may not need to be that way. While the past informs the present, it does not dictate the future. Indeed, the narrative the author describes is familiar to most of us…it’s culturally congruent with most of our experiences. What seems to be missing is the presence of mind to make changes needed to achieve the goal of loving connection with a meaningful community of friends. I’m reminded of the proverb: if you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.
