The New York Times – By CHRISTY WAMPOLE – Published: December 17, 2012 – Guns and the Decline of the Young Man
Wampole, in her thoughtful Opinionator article, Guns and the Decline of the Young Man, proposes that, as Americans stab out in an effort to makes sense of the apparently senseless violence at Shady Brook Elementary, we consider expanding the role of empathy and compassion for one another. She proposes that we, as a society, have inadvertently evolved to a system with a propensity to isolate and under-serve the ‘white young man’ demographic, thus paving the way for the litany of acts of rage that we have seen over the last few years at the hands of these young men.
A statistic from the NYT:
906 = total deaths in 2010 in:
Germany, France, Italy, UK, Spain, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands .Total combined population is 391 million.
9,960= total deaths in US.
Population 312 million.
Beyond the important discussion of gun laws, we must look more closely at what is driving these men to this sort of rageful act.
