Jonathan Shedler – Articles on Trauma Guidelines and Long-term Treatment
Sadly, the prestigious American Psychological Association (APA) recently released new guidelines for treating trauma. Most therapists experienced in treating people impacted by trauma are dumbfounded. The new APA standards for treatment of trauma are limited to short-term manualized treatment These APA conclusions are inconsistent with all evidence. The alternate reality represented in the new guidelines seems remarkably consistent with the cost-saving priorities of insurance companies, and of Veteran’s Affairs, both of whom are deeply committed to cost-saving measures.
APA’s ethics code begins, “Psychologists strive to benefit those with whom they work and take care to do no harm.” APA has an honorable history of fighting for patients’ access to good care and against health insurance company abuses. This apparent change is tragic.
