The next edition of the DSM might be getting addiction right. Definitions and understandings of addictions have evolved over time to a new comprehensive and useful perspective. An understanding of the mind/body connection…the indistinguishable interconnectedness between how our bodies and brains simultaneously respond to the drive for pleasure…is essential in the treatment of addiction. The neurotransmitter dopamine, which gives rise to feelings of craving, is the quarterback of addiction. Scientists have found that when you repeatedly take a substance like cocaine, your dopamine system becomes hyper-responsive, making the drug extremely difficult for the addicted brain to ignore. Just about any deeply pleasurable activity — sex, eating, Internet use — has the potential to become addictive and destructive.
